Subliminal Messaging and The Disney Corporation

Media Critics

While conservative critics were boiling over, many in the mainstream media took the subliminal messages light-heartily and joking. Entertainment Weekly columnist Benjamin Svetkey humorously wrote in his December 1995 article “Subliminal sexual messages. Full frontal male nudity. X-rated dialogue. Gay cross-dressing parties. Needless to say, we’re talking about the Walt Disney Co.” In the article Svetkey also pokes fun at the idea conservatives attacking Disney in general, “Disney? Antifamily? Anti-American? Say it ain't so, Mickey. But believe it or not, the giant of G-rated entertainment has become the religious right's Public Enemy No. 1.”

Jim Stratton, the first to pick up the story of ALL’s The Lion King publishing, stated that “We handled it lightly” when he wrote about the matter in his column for the Daily Press (Bannon, 1995). Ostman also notes in his article that others took this approach, such as Steve Harvey, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, quoting “Walt must be turning over in his crematory” (Ostman, 1996).
