Take Home Midterm

Due: at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001.
Value: 25% of your final grade.

Answer one of the following questions.

Directions:   You should approach the question you select as you would if you were answering the question on an in-class test (although I will expect your answer to be better written and proofread than on an in-class test). My intention is to test for comprehension of the material we have covered in class and whether you have given that material any critical thought. This is not intended as a research assignment. A typical answer to a question should be around 5-6 pages, handwritten, double-spaced or the typed equivalent.

1. In both "Famine, Affluence and Morality" & "All Animals Are Equal", Peter Singer argues that we must radically reform our moral beliefs.   Explain and assess one of the ways in which he claims this is so.  Is his argument convincing?  Why or why not?

2.  Much of our discussion over the last few weeks has concerned the question of what has intrinsic value.  Explain the views of this taken by Singer, the Land Ethic, Kant & Utilitarianism.  Which view is correct?  Defend your answer.  (Note:  if none of these views is correct, say why and defend your own answer.)
