Further Details

In preparation for this session, please read the articles by Caplan and Stefan & McManus.

You should also have a look at the questionnaire on the concept of disease.  Consider the conditions listed on the questionnaire and ask yourself how you would rate them.  Are they diseases?  Are they serious conditions? Are they treatable?  Are they the fault of the patient?  Are they external in cause?  Compare your answers to results reported by Stefan & McManus.

As for the parable entitled “You’ll Find Jesus There.”  This is provided not to endorse any particular set of religious views but to raise the idea that there are ways of conceiving of medical ‘items’ that go beyond a narrow medical conception (e.g., heart as pump vs. heart as seat of the soul).  Dr. Crellin will discuss this piece further in class.

Methods of Evaluation for the Ethics/Humanities/Health Law component of the ISD I course will be discussed during this session.
