Short Paper Topics
Those
of you who selected the option of writing short essays during the ISD I &
II course should submit your next essay by Feb. 10. Below are some possible
topics.
- Medicine
often concerns itself with fixing defects or abnormalities. However, as discussed in class, it is
not always clear what should be counted as a defect or abnormality. Should short stature, for example, be
counted as abnormal? Is deafness
always a defect? Discuss the ideas
of abnormality and defect. What
role should they play in medicine?
How should we understand the meaning of these concepts?
- Hormone
therapy offers both the prospect of replacing hormones that would normally
be present and of improving a patient ‘beyond normal’ in some
respect. Under what circumstances
is it morally acceptable for a patient to consent to hormone treatments on
his/her children? Is there a moral
difference between treatment that aims at ‘fixing a problem’ vs. treatment
that simply seeks to ‘improve’ the child?
Defend your answer.
3. A patient comes to you with the advertisement printed on the back of this page saying that s/he wants to try it as a friend who was taking it found that she felt much better and was losing weight. How would you counsel the patient?
