Exam Structure:

Part I: Short Answer Questions. Value = approx. 30%.
- 5-7 questions (probably some choice, e.g., do 6 of 8)
- all questions will be answerable in three or four sentences (at most).
E.g., What is mind-body dualism?
Part II: Explanatory Question. Value = approx. 30%
- answer 1 of (at least) 3 choices
- these questions will ask you to explain but not discuss some significant point from the material you are responsible for
- I would expect a typical answer to take approximately one to two pages.
E.g., Explain how Descartes argues for the view known as rationalism in Meditation II.
Part III: Essay Question. Value = approx. 40%
- answer 1 of (at least) 2 choices
- these questions will ask to you to explain and discuss some significant point from the material you are responsible for
- I would expect a typical answer to take at least several pages
E.g., Explain the argument we called the 'Argument from Memory'. (Make sure you explain Plato's Theory of Forms in the process.) Does the argument succeed? Defend your position.
There will be a further restriction on your choice of questions for Parts II & III.  You'll find the following instructions on the exam:
Instructions for Parts II & III: You must answer one question from Part II and one question from Part III.  Each question is classified as either being on Descartes or on Plato.  You must answer a different ‘type’ of question in Part II than you do in Part III. That is, if you answer a Plato question in Part II, you must answer a Descartes question in Part III.  If you answer a Descartes question in Part II, you must answer a Plato question in Part III.
