Northeast Water Polynya Expedition

Helicopter for medivac, mail and scientific observations onboard the German R/V Polarstern

The coastal plain of northeastern Greenland as viewed aloft from the helicopter (ca. 80 N latitude)

A coastal freshwater pond of Northeastern Greenland as seen from the air (the pond is ca. 0.5 km wide at the widest point)

A portion of the German icebreaker Polarstern (I couldn't back up far enough to get it all in the frame!). This was our home for 42 days.

A tranquil view of the Flade Iceblink on a beautifully calm day (ca. 82 N latitude)

Canadian icecamp for on-ice and through ice observations (the camp is ca. 2 km from the camera)

Large tabular iceberg close to the ship (note the dirty upper surface)

Ice Party! The only one we had in 42 days!

Drs. Peter Rowe, Kendra Daly and a German colleague onboard the Polarstern at our closest approach to the North Pole!
