The Winter 2024 schedule at a glance

Beginner Modern Foil Class — Winter 2024

Times:

7:00--8:00pm Wednesdays

In addition, everyone taking the class is welcome to practice at our regular practice times. See below.

Dates:

Jan 29 to April 3 (But it's never too late to join.)

Place:

MUN Field House.

Registration: Send email to memorial.u.fencing.club at gmail dot com or just at the start of class.
Instructor: Theodore Norvell
Equipment: Grippy, non-marking indoor only sneakers, track pants or tights, T-shirt. We supply the fencing gear. (A deposit is required.) Shorts must not be worn for safety reasons.  Shoes worn outside must not be used.
Prerequisite None.
Cost: Free to members.
Weather: Class will be cancelled if MUN or the Works is shut down for snow, hurricane, or other circumstances. Check the MUN cancellation page and the MUFC home page for cancellation notices.

Intermediate/Advanced Modern Foil Fencing Class — Winter 2024

Times:

Mondays 7:00--8pm

Instructor: Kirsti Mikoda

Sword for Stage and Screen Level 1 — Not offered this term

Dates: None.
Instructor: Kirsti Mikoda
Co-requisite: People taking this class should also take the beginner modern fencing class if they have not already taken it.
Cost: $25 for members. See below for membership costs.

Kids Fencing

The Allez! Fencing Club is currently on hiatus. Memorial Fencing is pleased to welcome kids from 12 up to join us.

Club Membership Winter 2024

Membership cost:
  • $50 per term for Memorial students. $75 per term for all others.
  • If you are not a CFF member in good standing, a $75.00 NLFA/CFF deposit will be added to your club membership. This will be fully refunded once you have your membership.
  • Discounts: Our club membership fee is less than $1.60 per hour. If you can't afford that, talk to us. We no longer participate in the St. John's R.E.A.L. program, but will continue to waive club fees for people with financial need.

A September to September NLFA/CFF membership is required.

Training Times and places:
  • Mondays 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the MUN Field House.
  • Thursdays 7:00 to 9:00pm at the MUN Field House.
  • All members are welcome at all training times, however priority for space and equipment will go to people taking the classes.

Safety:

You fence at your own risk and your safety is your personal responsibility. Not withstanding this, as a member of the Memorial University Fencing club, you commit to creating a safe environment for fencing. You must respect the safety policies of the club and the coaches' right to forbid you from fencing under conditions that they deem unsafe.

General safety rule

  • It is the moral responsibility of every club member to ensure that they, their opponent or partner, and all others are safe.

Specific safety rules.

  • Masks, jackets, and gloves must be worn whenever swords are crossed.
  • Masks, jackets, and gloves must be in good repair.
  • Masks must pass a 12kg punch test for all weapons.
  • We strongly encourage you to wear at least a 350N jacket and breaches.
  • A 350N plastron must be worn unless a 350N or better jacket must be worn.
  • Legs must be covered to below the knees. For epee, completely.
  • People with external gonads must wear athletic cups.
  • People with breasts are encouraged to wear breast protectors.
  • Fencers must ensure that the space behind themselves and their partners is free of obstacles, including reels.
  • Anyone crossing a strip must take responsibility for staying well out of the way.
  • All masks must be in good shape. Masks with tangs must be secured with a strap. Mask straps are not to be worn over the tang.

Covid-19 safety rules

  • If you think you may have covid or have been in recent contact with someone who has Covid, please do not come to fencing.
  • All Works, university, provincial precautions must be respected.
