    29 Sept. Joint Canada/USA ARES event: Very successful thanks to the efforts of ARRL, ICOM , RAC and SONRA and of course our NL ARES team. Congrats to all!
    1 July 2007: The NL ARES will be operating as VO1RAC on CW and SSB. This is a bouns points station for the RAC Canada Day Contest. The event was an outstanding success -- hats off to all the ARES members who participated and thanks to Ian and Laban who coordinated the operation. Note: VPFS Bob Cooke has sent his apologies to all concerned that the number of contacts was not published in the Sept/Oct 2007 TCA. He will see that the info is included in the next issue.
    FIELD DAY is on 23-24 June! This is an excellent opportunity to showcase emergency communications and amateur radio as a community resource. Several clubs will have stations on the air including BARK, MRCN and SoNRA. Don't forget that you can get 100 bonus points for sending an NTS radiotelegram to the Section Manager (VO1NA) or the Section Emergency Coordinator (VO1HLD). See the ARRL Field Day rules for further information.
    June 2007: A warm welcome to Ira VO1IRA as the new EC for Central NL.
    May 2007. VO1RAC and VO2RAC will be used by ARES for Canada Day this
    year. Please contact the SEC, ASM or SM on for information on how you can participate.

    Feb 2007: A warm welcome is extended to EC Laban Davis VO1HLD who has volunteered to become our new Section Emergency Coordinator. Feb 2007: The NL Field Organisation welcomes Les VO1UG as Emergency Coordinator for the South Coast district. Please note that there are still vacancies needing volunteers. December 2006: We are saddened by the resignations of VO1CBS VO1JEZ and VO1PX as EC's but very grateful for their dedicated services. Their big shoes will be filled by VO1RYL VO1TX and VO1UO. On behalf of RAC Field Services, NL, please have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

    16 Aug 2006. Its Official -- we have another 160m DXCC in VO Land: Frank Davis VO1HP has been notified by the ARRL DXCC desk of this outstanding achievment of making 2-way contact with 100 different countries. Frank had been experimenting on 160m for several decades and wrote a technical paper on the inverted L which may be seen on the MRCN web page. Congrats Frank.
    August 2006: Carl VO1UL invites the Section Manger to visit his shack and meet with EC Jeremy VO1JEZ and SAARA member Jeff VO1LT. Thanks Carl!
  • 11 July 2006 Carl VO1UL of SAARA relays a telegram from MRCN to Hobart as part of the Marconi Centenary celebrations in Tasmania.
  • 8 July 2006 Amateur radio emergency communications played a vital role today as VO1DD VO1KAC and VO1BC handled emergency traffic in a region where commercial communication is poor or nonexistent. See the full story in the November/December 2006 of "The Canadian Amateur".

Suggestions for changes to improve participation and involvement will be drafted for comments from all in the section. This will appear here in the near future it is strongly recommended that you avail of this opportunity to make your views known by email to vo1na rac.ca. We welcome Hudson VO2HV and Laban VO1HLD to the Field Organisation as Emergency Coordinators.

    January 2005: Are you interested in assisting with the BARK/MRCN Transatlantic 2 Metre project? If you have a a good multi-mode 2 metre rig and beam, please contact Frank at VO1HP (at) rac.ca.
    Reports of Field Day operations have been received from three VO groups. Please remember to have your documentation completed according to the ARRL rules and submitted to ARRL and RAC/NL (c/o VO1NA) so as to be postmarked by 27 July 2004 (on or before).
    The ARRL Field Day is set for 24-25 June 2006. Please see the May-June 2004 issue of TCA for the official rules for the ARRL Field Day (Smallwood) trophy.

  • New Emergency Coordinator: Jeremy VO1JEZ of the St Anthony ARA has accepted the position of EC for the Great Northern Peninsula area. Congrats, Jeremy.
  • Carl VO1UL of SAARA, Net Control Operator, has proposed to change the Net Frequency from 3785 to 3740 kHz to take effect on 9 Feb 2004. He has advised the NL NCS and Section Managers for NL and MAR of the proposal. The change will be permanently adopted pending the outcome of a one month trial.
    Any inquiries concerning the RAC field organisation may be directed to VO1BC(.at.)RAC.CA or VO1NA(.at.)RAC.CA Both Ian and Joe are regulars on the Evening Traffic Net at 7:00 PM local time.


    All amateurs in the section are encouraged to apply for and use the special call signs VO1RAC and VO2RAC as appropriate during the Canada Day and Winter contests. These call signs are issued by the RAC Atlantic Director, VO1AU, who has made up a policy for the assignment of these callsigns.

    Intruder Watch:
    Please report intruders to the NL Evening Traffic Net.
    09 Feb 2005. Non-amateur transmissions on 3740 have been reported.
    Local fishermen on 3777/3482 kHz. Japanese Fishermen have been reported on 3.5 and 3.6 kHz.
    RTTY was heard on 14.006 MHz on 1400-1458 UTC 22 Sept. 2004. It was not an amateur transmission. VO1TK reported it to Industry Canada.

    Pictured above is a big coil from the junkbox of VO1HP. And yes, that is an 807 to give you an idea of how big it really is. Your task is to estimate the inductance. The RAC member who submits the most accurate and creative estimate (as judged by the MUN Physics Dept.) will be given a free 807 (the wet type) at the graduate Students' Pub, Bitters at Memorial University, compliments of MRCN. All entries should be submitted to VO1NA and postmarked or sent by email before 1 Jun 2003.

    Tech Quiz #2

    6 one ohm resistors are connected so as to form a tetrahedron. (4 sides, 4 vertices). Calculate the impedance (2.45 GHz) between any 2 vertices. The sides are 5 cm long. Entries due by 30 June 2007.
