BE, on "Beauty and the Beast: Love the Way You Lie."

One debate about Disney movies is that they promote a negative message about women, presenting them as subordinate to men, passive and without a voice or mind of their own. While I do not personally believe this to be true, the argument can be convincing when you look at this theme specifically in the movie Beauty and the Beast and isolate certain scenes. In this film, Disney's views on women can be taken as sexist, old-fashioned, gender stereotypical, and downright insulting. Belle is subordinate, controlled and held prisoner by a violent man. Even when given the opportunity to leave after he is injured by a coyote attack, she cannot force herself to leave due to the fact that she has been so beaten down by his abuse and dominance. Even though he treats her poorly she continues to tend to him and care for him, a role traditionally assigned to women. I have created this video to showcase these points, emphasizing the viewpoint that within Disney films, women can be seen to be at men's disposal, to be used and done away with at their convenience, as well as mistreated and harassed for their enjoyment. Disney's Beauty and the Beast illustrates the theme of man as powerful, and woman as weak and at his mercy, unable and unwilling to stand up against him.
