JS, on "Their Sacrifice. "

At first glance Jane seems like your typical Disney female. When we first see Jane in Disney's Tarzan she is being chased by baboons and is dramatically rescued by a swinging Tarzan. However as the film progresses she becomes more than a helpless female needing to be rescued.   Jane is an extremely intelligent, proper, and well-brought up women. Unlike in other Disney films Jane does not fall in love with Tarzan right from the get-go. She is more interested in learning all about him and teaching him the ways of the Western world than in falling in love. We get to see them both falling in love as the film progresses.

Both Tarzan and Jane are willing to make huge sacrifices for one another. Most Princes' are the stereotypical ‘white knight' in that they rescue the damsel in distress with no real sacrifice on their part. Tarzan and Jane are equally as willing to make sacrifices for one another, Tarzan betrays his own family to be with Jane while, in the end, Jane sacrifices returning to the ‘civilized world' so she can stay with Tarzan. It not a case of the female character simply waiting around for ‘her man' but rather it shows Tarzan and Jane as equals. I chose to portray both the falling in love through learning about one another and the sacrifices they are willing to make because, in my opinion, it is not something you see very often portrayed in Disney's films. Being one of the later films, it was released in 1999, I think it shows a more progressive side of Disney when portraying gender. My Sacrifice by the band Creed just seemed like a fitting choice of song.
