CO, on "Priceless"

Commentary: Ariel, the heroine of Disney's The Little Mermaid, is considered to be one of the more modern princesses. Unlike her predecessors Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora, Ariel knows what she wants and is proactive in achieving it rather than waiting around for someone.  And what Ariel wants is Prince Eric. Despite their very brief encounter, Ariel is so enamored by the prince that she goes to the sea witch Ursula in hopes that she may gain a pair of legs to be closer to Eric. This all sounds very romantic, that Ariel (already) loves the prince so much that she is willing to make sacrifices for him, but it's important to look at the situation objectively. In the end, Ariel is willing to give up (1) her home, (2) her family and friends, (3) her voice and (4) BEING A MERMAID to be with Eric. Since it's a Disney movie, of course she gets her voice back and gets to be with the prince, but she still loses everything else. It's actually pretty disconcerting that she is willing to give up so much for a man and this isn't the greatest message to send to young girls. Meanwhile, what does Eric give up to be with Ariel? Nothing.

I think the song I chose to accompany my video (Priceless by Melanie Fiona) is a good fit with what I tried to portray. The lyrics are told from the point of view of a woman who is willing to sacrifice anything for her man because she thinks that their love is worth it.
