This award is in memory of Dr. Gunter Hartman, who was a previous head of the Political Science department. He was also the faculty advisor and head organizer for the Model United Nations for many years. Dr. Hartman passed away suddenly in the summer of 2000. This award was created in honor of his memory and hard work.
The award is granted during the final plenary General Assembly to the best delegation. The chairs of each committee session take note of outstanding students during these sessions. These students should 1) encourage cooperation among all states while avoiding excessive preoccupation with their own self-interest, 2) exhibit good public speaking and, 3) display excellent knowledge of both their country and topic. These goals embody many of the reasons for the existence of the United Nations.
This is a delegation award, not an individual delegate award. At the end of the second committee meeting, each chair will make a list of the top three delegates in each room who met these criteria. The secretariat will evaluate the list and make the final decision on the winning delegation. Good luck to all students.

This award is a relatively new creation of the Memorial UN Society, and is presented to a delegate who possesses the qualities considered to be ideal in the context of a simulation if this nature. The Award’s namesake, Mr. Matthew Gillard, repeatedly embodied these qualities, and time and again proved his prowess in the model UN setting, both in St. John’s and abroad.
