Eight prints recently discovered in the course of research by Richard
Neill and Éliane Carouge in the preparation of an exhibition due to
open on 18 June 2005 in Evreux, "Marins de l'Eure" ["Seamen from l'Eure"].
This exhibition will be devoted to the diplomatic and hydrographic work
of three seamen from l'Eure: Liberge de Granchain, Lieudé de Sepmanville
and de la Roncière le Noury, and to their contribution to the
history of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1784 and 1858.

Huit épreuves récemment découvertes au cours
des recherches de Richard Neill et Éliane Carouge dans le cadre de
la préparation d'une exposition qui s'ouvrira le 18 juin 2005 à
Evreux, "Marins de l'Eure". Cette exposition sera consacrée aux
travaux diplomatiques et hydrographiques de trois marins de l'Eure": Liberge de Granchain, Lieudé de Sepmanville
et de la Roncière le Noury, et leur contribution à l'histoire
de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador en 1784 et 1858.

Apparently the label of this print notes that this is a view of Paquet. We had already seen the image, but were unaware of the identification. |

C'est
peut-être la
plus intéressante de toutes les photographies ci-dessus. Il
s'agit d'une vue de St-Pierre, que Miot a dû visiter bon nombre
de fois. En effet, une des épreuves dans la collection dans
Bibliothèque et Archives Canada nous montre un autre aspect de
ce port (voir PA-194625). Ce qui nous
intéresse particulièrement ici, c'est qu'en 1858 et 1863 deux
articles ont paru sur Terre-Neuve, le premier par O'Brig, et le deuxième
avec des extraits du Voyage à Terre-Neuve de Gobineau (pour
plus de détails voir notre bibliographie).
Les deux comportaient une gravure de St-Pierre (toutefois, dans le cas de
l'article de Gobineau, l'étiquette était fausse, car les titres
des illustrations de St-Pierre et de St. John's avaient été
renversés). Nous savions que ces illustrations étaient vraisemblablement
inspirées d'une photographie. Miot, on le savait, était actif
dans ces parages à cette époque-là, mais nous ne connaissions
aucune épreuve de lui, dans le domaine public ou ailleurs, qui aurait
pu constituer la base de ces illustrations. L'épreuve ci-dessus, que
nous n'avons vue nulle part ailleurs, fournit le chaînon manquant.

This is perhaps the most interesting of all of the above photographs. It is a view of St-Pierre, where Miot would have been on numerous occasions. Indeed, one of the prints in the collection of Library and Archives Canada is a different view of this port (see PA-194625). What is particularly interesting about this print is the fact that in 1858 and 1863 two articles on Newfoundland were published, the first by O'Brig, and the second containing extracts of Gobineau's Voyage à Terre-Neuve (for further details, see our bibliography). Both contained an engraving of St-Pierre (though in the case of the Gobineau article, it was mis-labelled, since the captions for the illustrations of St. John's and St-Pierre were reversed). It was known to be highly likely that these engravings were taken from a photograph. Miot was of course active in the area at that time, but no print of his that might have formed the basis of these illustrations had come to light in the public domain, or, to our knowledge, elsewhere.
