At this period, since it was not possible to reproduce photographs directly in print, the photograph was instead used as a base for an engraving. This allowed the artist considerable licence in interpreting the subject. In Images de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon (p. 11 - see bibliography) it is noted that the basic elements of this scene, the immovable objects, had already been used in an engraving for a text by O'Brig in L'Illustration of 1859; the authors of Images de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon also point out that, in that case, the artist had entirely different human figures in the street, and into the bargain had changed what in 1859 was a cross in the background to a signal flag in 1863!
