Gobineau: Illustrations

This engraving is very similar to the one illustrating the article by O'Brig published in 1859.

In a letter of 30 June 1858 to his minister from Griquet, very close to Quirpon (or Kirpon, as it was usually written in French), la Roncière, the Commodore of the French naval station, added a note at the end:

"I enclose herewith a photograph showing the Gassendi when it was stuck in ice. The print is not as good as it might have been, since the weather was very dark."

And at the head of the letter is written "une photographie jointe" ["photograph enclosed"]. Unfortunately the dossier no longer includes any photograph.

Cette gravure ressemble de près à celle utilisée pour illustrer l'article signé O'Brig publié en 1859.

Le 30 juin 1858 à Griquet, très proche de Quirpon (ou Kirpon, comme on écrivait d'habitude en français), la Roncière, commandant de la station navale, a ajouté une note à la fin d'une lettre à son ministre:

"Je joins ici une photographie représentant le Gassendi tel qu'il était pris dans les glaces. L'épreuve n'est pas très bien venue, le temps étant très sombre." Archives nationales, Paris, MAR BB4 762 (1858)

Et au début de cette lettre on trouve "une photographie jointe". Malheureusement le dossier ne comprend plus de photographie.
