["On the deck of the ship ARDENT before its departure.] 1857 /
Lorient, France."]

Our thanks to Claude Millé of Caudiès,
France, who points to a clear mistake in the caption to this print. The
Ardent had two masts, drums for paddle wheels and a low rail. Here,
no such drums can be seen, and the rail, about two metres high, is unlike
that of the Ardent. Mr. Millé suggests two hypotheses:
1. The photo could be of the hybrid frigate the Astrée, which
Miot boarded in July 1869 in Lorent for the Pacific naval station, when
he was Commander and Chief of Staff for Rear-Admiral Georges Cloué.
2. Since the internet site artprice.com mentions the sale in 2001 of a
Miot print with the caption "bridge of the corvette LA SÉRIEUSE"
(the Sérieuse, launched in Brest in 1849, decommissioned in
1899). The deck shown here could well be that of a corvette. Is this the
Sérieuse?
What is certain is that this cannot be
the Ardent, shown in another print held by the National Archives
of Canada, PA-194617.
All of this is a fine illustration of
problems relating to the labels of old photographs: who wrote them, when,
and based on what information?
