We would like to thank
Wilson Dicks, a resident of Burin, for informing us that this photograph
shows his community, close to the islands of St-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Below is a drawing of Burin dating from 1849 confirming
this identification.
Burin is outside the limits within which
the French had fishing rights, and normally the French naval station had
few reasons to go there. However, in 1859 the international commission, in
which Gobineau participated and used for his Voyage à Terre-Neuve,
went there to look into invasions by French fishermen outside their limites
in this area. Miot no doubt took advantage of the opportunity to take this
photograph.

Burin se situe en
dehors de la zone où les Français avaient le droit de pêcher,
et normalement la station navale française avait peu de raisons de
s'y rendre. Pourtant en 1859, la commission internationale, à laquelle
Gobineau a participé et dont il a tiré parti dans son Voyage
à Terre-Neuve, est allée à cet endroit pour enquêter
sur l'envahissement de pêcheurs français en-dehors de leurs
limites dans ces parages. Miot en a sans doute profité pour prendre
cette photographie.
