In September 2006, Manitoba's University College of the North
introduced the first degree program for aboriginal midwifery, founded on
aboriginal teachings and culture, along with current methods of clinical
practice.
In 2005 the Health Council of Canada made a recommendation to
increase the numbers of First Nations, Inuit and Metis professionals in
the workforce. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal midwives collaborate to
provide care to pregnant women at The Inuulitsivik Maternity Centre in
Quebec, the Six Nations Maternal and Child Centre in Ontario, and the birthing
centre at Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. In September 2006, a three year
midwifery program for Inuit commenced at the Nunavut Arctic College, with
exit points after the successful completion of each academic year.

The address of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (which replaced
the UKCC) is frequently requested for information about midwifery
programmes both for direct-entry and for nurses. It is important
to remember that any programme must meet the requirements of the
jurisdiction where an application for licensure will eventually be made.
Therefore, it is advisable to find out the requirements before entering a
programme outside of that province.
