On the background (left) hillside (Signal Hill) is Cabot Tower, the site of the receipt of the first transatlantic radio signal (Marconi). To the right of that hill is Cape Spear, the eastern-most point of North America.
On June 24, 1997 Newfoundland & Labrador celebrated the 500th anniversity of its discovery by John Cabot. The Vikings were here a thousand years before that, but we don't have a specific date to commemorate.
