Born in the Netherlands, immigrated to Canada in 1957, B.A. and M.A. University of Windsor, Ph.D. Queen's University.

Have taught at the University of Alberta, at the International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan (1984-1991) and since 1991 at Memorial University in St John's Newfoundland.
