Teaching Related Activity
2009

A New CourseIn 2006, because of high failure rates in the quantitative section of a second year course in Pharmacology, the School of Nursing instituted the compulsory taking of the MPT for students admitted to their program.  As a result, any student who scores less than 50 is required to complete Math 102F (using the Fundamental Mathematics textbook) before s/he enters the second year of the nursing program.  Because this initiative has proven to be so successful, the School of Nursing has now recommended that, for administrative purposes, a separate Math 102F course be created specifically for nursing students, Math 102N.  This course is expected to be in place for the Fall 2009 semester.

2008-present

The MLC recently began offering its self-study version of Math 1090 through distance education.  In the spring semester of 2008, 6 teachers from the same high school in Halifax completed this course.

2004-present

Developed and implemented a pilot to blend an accelerated Math 103F with Math 1050/1051 in one semester.

2002-pesent

Developed and implemented a pilot and phase-in plan to incorporate a self-study vision of Mathematics 1090 into the teaching. responsibilities of the Mathematics Learning Centre.  This was the first credit course taught at the MLC.

2002

Trained MLC undergraduate part-time instructors to design and conduct enrichment workshops for junior high school students (Avalon School Boards).

Summer 2002

Piloted an intervention program at the MLC as an alternative to “summer school” for junior high school students who failed math.

2001-2002

Developed and implemented a pilot of mathematics modules for an “Academic Bridging Program” offered at Memorial University in December 2001.

2000-present

(with D. Porter) Developed a website for the Mathematics Learning Centre:  www.mun.ca/mlc.

2000-2001

Operation Foresight, joint pilot project with O’Donel High School, bringing a team of instructors from the Mathematics Learning Centre into the high school to work with Grade 12 students who have been identified as being “at risk” with respect to basic math skills.

2000-present

Developed and implemented a training program for teaching assistants and part-time instructors at the MLC.

1999-present

Developed and implemented a scheme for incorporating (a) students in and recent graduates from the Faculty of Education, and (b) Teachers in the K-12 system, into the teaching structure of the Mathematics Skills Program at the Mathematics Learning Centre, to help address transitional issues between the secondary and post-secondary educational streams.

Between 1988 and 2000

bullet Various activities associated with collecting and analyzing data and preparing reports to document different aspects of “The Math Problem” in Newfoundland, Canada, North America and around the World.
bullet Developed several Continuing Education programs:  GMAT math preparation; high school math camps; math skills assessment; math skills upgrading; summer school for Marine Institute students who failed their first-year math course.
bullet Pioneered the concept of Distance Education for Personal and Professional Development (Division of Continuing Education) with the development of a Distance Education Program in Math Skills Upgrading, 1996.
bullet Founded the Mathematics Learning Centre.
bullet

Based on data analysis of student skills levels, replaced Math 101F with  Math 102F, 103F and 104F.

bullet

Developed computer software for Math 102F, 103F, 104F.

bullet

Developed distance education offerings of Math 102F, 103F, 104F.

bullet

bullet

Pilot Project: Delivery of a Math Skills Upgrading Program to 25 recipients of unemployment insurance or social assistance, with funding from the Economic Recovery Commission, May 1993.

Between 1978 and 1980
bullet

Advocated the creation of a Math Help Centre to provide students with free tutorial assistance outside their professor’s office hours.

bullet

Negotiated an arrangement with NORDCO to provide supervised student research assistants to work at their site.

Between 1980 and 1988

bullet Revised the structure of labs for Stats 2500 and 2501.

Government Publications

1.         Excerpt taken from Memorial University President’s Report 2007, p. 11. Also quoted in Memorial University’s Research Report Highlights 2007, p. 37:
Interest in math researcher’s work quickly multiplies - Local and national media attention added up to a lot of interest in a Memorial math researcher’s new book, launched in February, 2007. Dr. Sherry Mantyka, director of the Mathematics Learning Centre, wrote The Math Plague: How to Survive School Mathematics, for parents, teachers and students of all ages concerned about math skills. It’s based on Dr. Mantyka’s research into why bright learners have trouble with math. The Memorial professor has been helping students struggling in mathematics for over 17 years, trying to find ways to improve their understanding and retention. In January, she turned her attention to an unlikely student – CBC Radio-One producer Heather Barrett, who took Dr. Mantyka up on the offer of an “extreme mathover.” “Dr. Mantyka’s methods completely changed my attitude towards math and changed the way I think about learning and doing math,” Ms. Barrett said, “It’s still really helpful to me when I am trying to help my children with their math homework.”

D.        Special Conferences and Workshops

The Math Education Special Session, CMS Summer Meetings, St. John’s, June 6-8, 2009

The title of the Math Education Special Session is: Cognitive and Developmental Psychology Applied to the Learning of Mathematics. Our ultimate goal in offering this session is to bridge the chasm between theoretical research and teaching/learning practices.

In addition to the six invited developmental psychologists, John Mighton, Fields Institute, author of The Myth of Ability: Nurturing Mathematical Talent in Every Child and The End of Ignorance: Multiplying Our Human Potential, and founder of JUMP (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigy), has also agreed to speak. His participation is being funded directly by the Office of the President.

The third day’s events are in the hands of the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network who are organizing a symposium that will involve all the CMS Math Education Special Session participants and CCLRNet’s own membership, who may also participate in the CMS’s Math Education Special Session events on Saturday and Sunday, if they wish.

The coordination with CCLRNet is very exciting. Literacy has a firmly established national network and numeracy does not. If we can consolidate a connection with the national literacy organization via this joint event in St. John’s, the opportunity for numeracy advocacy at a national level will be great enhanced. Furthermore, the research being presented by the psychologists who are attending this event applies both to language and mathematics. This gives us a great opportunity to dispel many myths about the learning of mathematics, and these joint meetings could provide a major turning point in redirecting the focus of learning strategies in our school systems.

The Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) is unique in its focus on using current research in cognitive psychology in the way the learning of mathematics is facilitated for at-risk university students. It is my hope that in bringing together teachers, policy-makers and researchers in the environment of the MLC, useful collaborations will be identified.

Member, Program Planning Committee; Chair, Partnerships Session Subcommittee; Session Chair, National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, Canadian Regional Conference, St. John’s, NF, 1993-1995; Invited Participant, Deliberative Conference of Task Force on Mathematics and Science Education, St. John’s, NF, Feb. 27-28, 1989; Conference Organizer, Society for Exact Philosophy, Annual Meeting 1987, St. John’s, NF, Aug. 27-29, 1987; attended the Cuernevaca Centre for Intercultural Dialogue on Development, Cuernevaca, Mexico, May 1999; studied African drumming and dancing in Ghana, Africa; Jan./Feb., 1999.

May 12-16, 2008

A week-long workshop was conducted for two teachers from the Saskatoon Public School Division. These teachers were trained in the use of the MLC’s diagnostic survey instruments. The Saskatoon Public School Division’s Pilot Project to use the Mathematics Learning Centre’s diagnostic survey instruments to place all incoming grade nine students at Evan Hardy Collegiate in either regular stream math courses or the Mathematics Learning Centre’s remedial program was instigated in the Spring of 2008 for placement in the Fall 2008 school year. The remedial program is being delivered by one of the two teachers who received the training at the MLC.  After only one term of the program, the average pre-test score more than doubled.  The Saskatoon Public School Division is now considering ways to introduce this program in all its schools.
