Men approach"...In the later years of the Second Age, after Sauron's purposes were discovered by the bearers of the rings, those who would not yolk themselves to him formed a great alliance. 'The Last Alliance' as it was later known, as no such fellowship of Men and Elves was ever seen again. The free peoples mustered their armies at the Elven stronghold of Imladris (known to Men as 'Rivendell'). And there The Elven king Gil-Galad, Elrond his herald, Elendil the high king of Arnor and his son Isildur, king of Gondor, met to plan their war against Sauron.

"In the third year of their arming and preparation, Elendil and Isildur set out with a strong company of men, to ascertain the conditions of the road they would take when the host marched from Imladris in the spring. As they turned upon their homeward route in the foothills of the Misty Mountains, hard by the road to Caradhras, they were set upon by a company of Orcs, such as had been sent by Sauron to spy out the preparations of his enemies, and waylay them..."

In this picture, we see part of this company of men, armed with swords and spears.  A large contingent of archers follows.

Nazgul watchesCorrupted already by Sauron, the captain of the waiting orcs, a Nazgul, clambers to the top of a hill to view the approaching column of men.  Confident of victory, he slinks back down into the valley carved by the stream below.

[Hmmm, I think I goofed replacing my wargame room wall with a blue cloudy sky...  Shouldn't it be dark for these bad guys?  On the other hand they, in the movie, tore after Glorfindel/Arwen in broad daylight, so maybe I'm OK!]

Shhh, shhhh! Be quiet, they are coming!Unseen by the approaching men (who nevertheless suspect something, I mean it is, afterall, a wargame for Pete's sake!), one group of orcs wait in ambush in a stream bed around the corner of a cliff.

[Oh crap, there's that stupid blue sky again... were orcs afraid of the sun at this stage in the Tolkien mythology?  My humble apologies to any purist this may upset!!! 8) ]

Twang!!!A troop of Orc archers, commanded by Doug, harass the approaching column with indirect fire over a hill.  While the initial volleys were of little consequence, these archers would later do very well, constantly attriting first the shield bearing sword and spear men of the company and later having a grave effect on the Good but shieldless archers.
