An email. here is the text of an important email i sent out last week.

hi folks. chad here. a few things i'd like to make sure you're aware of

1. Graduation Transition Program

alright, first a little background

a couple of weeks ago i had a brief meeting with lynn and chris from the centre for career development (CCD) regarding their pilot project with us. CCD is already a great resource centre for just about anyone, with information and advice on getting in to the workforce either in your discipline or outside, both in terms of networking and resources, and in terms of skill development, like mock interviews and interview tips (ask emily), resume skills, and networking stategies. CCD has a graduation transition program specifically geared toward getting into a career based on the skill set that an undergraduate degree provides, and this year they are working with us and geography. they're looking for our input and they're looking for our participation. to get the ball rolling, we're trying to schedule some workshops like the ones that are being run this week for the faculty of arts, except with a decidedly chemistry angle.
you can check out http://www.mun.ca/ccd/ for a better idea.

lynn and chris would like to schedule these workshops for us, and we need to find a time which works for most of us. so: you guys need to get back to me, so that we can find a time which is best. we should really take advantage of this opportunity, si nce its not often that a centre shows enough interest in a SINGLE department to specifically set up meetings and come over here at our convenience. i need to know by the end of the week, so reply as soon as possible

2. society dues \\ society services

the following people (as of press time) are members in good standing of the chemistry society: amanda peddle, john byrne, inga liu, amanda ropson, darryl reid, sean rideout, me, erin smyth, steve carrol, roger crowley, rosie, scott, sabrina, lianne, robyn chaulk, jayson byrne, melissa williams, and nikki spurrell.

if your name is not on that list, you need to PAY YOUR SOCIETY FEE! your fee includes free coffee, all the stuff in the society room, and it also provides liquid capital for us to get mixer stuff at the beginning of the semester (i.e. now). the mixer will pay for itself, but as the old saying goes, it takes money to make money. additionally, it seems few of us are interested in the coffee anymore... there was a pot made at the colloquium (for obvious reasons :P), but other than that.... what do you want from your society (in the material services department)

3. temporary internet files \\ computers

alright. chronics is mostly fuckered. i'm mildly considering wiping chronics over midterm break provided i can find somewhere to back up necessary files. in the meantime, what you can do to help::

i) minimize the size of your temporary internet files! i've sent instructions out about this before. put the maximum size down to 5 megs or so, and then empty your temporary internet files. I CANT DO THIS WITHOUT RESETTING YOUR PASSWORD, SO DO IT YOUR SELF. a clogged hard drive means that windows has no space to operate on, which means it starts eating itself. and in case you are wondering, it doesnt have permissions to use the dump. we've been lucky enough that the dump is problem-free, which is more important considering how frustrating it is to lose a project or a thesis....

ii) save any and all files in your dump folder on D:\, and try and back up stuff elsewhere. one way or another, chronics is going to get formatted, eventually. so prepare.

4) we're not your fscking mother in here!!!
i spent some time cleaning the table yesterday, it was quite the state. among the unassigned items: journals, spectra, textbooks, binders. also a boatload of looseleaf, which is now up for grabs. if its not gone in the next couple of days, i'm stickin g it in a drawer so i can clean/wash the table, with is encrusted with candle wax, evaporated coke, and other unidentified goo. happily, the sink hasnt been to bad lately, and kudos to whoever it was that cleaned the fridge the other night. we DO have a c learly marked garbage can an recycle bin, so the only thing keeping your from getting your trash where is belongs is a few steps (or a well-placed toss, if you're good).

5) the website

i'm working on the website. the major intimidation factor is the desire for a lot of society pics on the website. there are a fsckload, and they're all in darryl's dump(s). and a lot of them consist of general drunker stupor, which is not going up on the website wholesale. so. until someone makes a list of pics which we can use (excercise some judgement here folks), i'm not going near it. the mixer poster archive will be up by next week, as will the links and news archive.
do you guys have any suggestions? i may be able to automatically include headines from major news websites and/or general sites, in an effort to make the website more useful to us and people abroad. anything you'd like to see?

6) fundraising ideas

with conference fast approaching, no funds from MUNSU, and less money going around in general in the science faculty and chemistry departments, we need ideas for fundraisers. mixers are only going so far, and pepsi debts eat up any profit which the pe psi is generating right now. we have a choice: pay out of our own pockets for conference (which is going to be significantly more expensive as compared to last year), or raise some money to help cover costs. are sponsorships the answer?? do we want to tal k to molson? (i know it has worked for SMU, kieths gave them all kinds of stuff last year) INCO?? do we know people who want to support opportunites for undergraduates??

7) MIXER@@@$^#$^$@*

last but by no means least, a respite from all this reponsibility in the form of a mixer. this friday, C-4019, 5:00PM-8:00PM. bring friends! sorry about cancelling two weeks back, but, well, the building was closed. NABS, NonNABS available, ID require d.

as a postscript, the best way to let us know about anything you want done is to EMAIL us. it only takes a couple seconds to drop a quick line here to chronics@mun.ca, and we're always checking this email. if we wan t to generate some discussion, just reply to everyone on the mailing list! (chad hugs the internet)

alright, thats 20 for now.
