Computers and Statistics

  • I have developed some software using GNU tools for various research needs, including the R package diveMove to work with dive data from time-depth recorders (TDRs). The latter is currently available as a contributed package from CRAN.
  • I have become interested in Bayesian analytical techniques lately, so I have started gathering some notes from the different sources I am reading, which others might find helpful. Comments are, of course, welcome.

Ringed seal ecology

Remote sensing

  • I have prepared animations of monthly chlorophyll-a concentrations and sea surface temperatures at the ocean's surface, as seen by SeaWiFS and MODIS (Terra and Aqua) sensors, respectively, over the Southern Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean from 2001 through 2003. This was my Ph.D. study area. The frame rate is not the same for both animations because the features in each time series require different values to be appreciated easily. Notice the seasonal advance and retreat of the Subantarctic Polar Front (~9 C), and the development of chlorophyll-a blooms north of Iles Crozet. Notice also how closely the fronts correspond to bathymetry, which is displayed by the contours (1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 m).

  • I'm currently involved in a ringed seal ecology project in Hudson Bay and Foxe Basin, where the distribution of chlorophyll-a and sea ice is important. Here are animations of time series of these variables during 2006, when we started studying ringed seals.

  • You can browse my bibliography, which is on ecological topics for the most part, but contains other items as well. If you're interested in any of these, please contact me with the item number and I'll try to provide a copy. There are many items in my library that have not yet been entered in the database, so feel free to request items that you feel I might have.
